For single dads, getting back into the dating scene can be quite a challenge. Raising kids is a tough job, and between work and home life, it can seem like there really isn’t a place for romance. Keep trying, however, as the payoff is worth it.
Getting back out there
For men who have suffered the breakdown of a long-term relationship, it can be a huge knock to their confidence, and getting back out there into the dating world can appear daunting or even demoralizing. It’s hardly surprising; now that you’re a dad, casual dating is not really an option, but who’s to know which women are serious and which are not?
It doesn’t matter who left whom or how the marriage or relationship broke down: single dads deserve to date just as much as anyone else. No one expects dad to rush into it, however. You’ll know when it’s time to start dating again (if you’re still mentioning the ex every other minute, for example, you may want to wait a while).
Discuss it openly with your kids
It’s okay to tell your children that you’re ready to date again. You may be surprised by how easily they take it. Simply explain that even though they are the most important people in your life, you would also like to have a friend who is a woman, someone who you can go to the movies or have dinner with. You don’t have to tell your children everything about the new lady just yet – and it should be up to them (as well as you) to decide when it is time for everyone to eventually meet.
Regaining sexual confidence
While getting back into the dating world is about finding a woman who understands and respects how seriously you take your role as a father, it should also be fun. Dating should be a forum for you to stop feeling guilty about how little time you get with your kids since the divorce, or whatever gripes linger on from the break-up. Remember: you’re a single guy, and you deserve to go out and have a good time, just like you did before the marriage.
If the old adage ‘just get back on the horse’ isn’t enough, you might need a confidence boost. Dad needs to start feeling good about himself again. Don’t be afraid to try new things, to make light of the situation, to relax and have fun. After all, happiness and fun are contagious, and women love men who make them laugh, so remember to smile and lighten up! Pick up a hobby or fun activity you always wanted to try but just never had the motivation, and ask if your new lady friend would like to join in – perhaps a dance lesson together, for example (a perfect way to cozy up together in a relaxed environment). Male lingerie, such as sexy men’s briefs and thongs can be another way to put the fun back into the dating game and help men regain the sexual confidence they had pre break-up.
No matter what the circumstances, single dads deserve some romance in their lives. While it can be a challenge to return to dating for a number of reasons, a lack of confidence to get back out there should not be one of them.
